Rence/Tvrz: Suda-Lukovsky Castle

by Sylvester Suda (Translator)

A diagram representing Rence castle. The Suda-Lukovsky castle of Rence was of plain architectural (gothic) construction with simple decorative design. The castle was surrounded by a moat and on the north by a grove with a pond. The eastern wall housed the servants hall (or kitchen) and the gate tower with half (or divided) access by way of a wooden draw bridge. A closed-off court. yard was located off the north wall; the other walls were part of the palace buildings, all one story high*. To the south are the remains of the main building**. It had a povalove roof and walls with large windows, three on each side. Today they're walled over.

The vault, at ground level, served as a lawful prison for the disloyal.

In the 19 century, the castle became a part of a large farm estate.

Petr Suda of Rence***, in the year 1474, made this place his residence. The castle has since been renovated in the renaissance style***.

In the beginning of the 16 century, the Sudas acquired land holdings near iron mountain. Rence was sold to J. Markvart of Hradku. From 1571 the estate was owned by the Loub family of Lub. The estate passed on to the Lukavsky family in the year 1662.

* Servants' quarters, stables, granaries, cow barns, etc.
** Only one of the four wings of the original building is left.
*** Petr Suda held the title of knight.
